Dear Parents/Guardians,
The adolescent years are marked by a roller coaster of emotions--difficult for students and their parents. It is easy to misread depression as normal adolescent turmoil; however, depression (among the most common of mental illnesses) appears to be occurring at a much earlier age. Depression, which is treatable, is a leading risk factor for suicide. In addition, self-injury has become a growing problem among our youth.
To proactively address these issues, the Concordia School District is offering depression awareness and suicide prevention training as required by Section 170.048, RSMo which requires all students to participate in a youth suicide awareness and prevention program.
Our goals are straightforward:
❖ To help our students understand that depression is a treatable illness.
❖ The importance of dealing with stress, anxiety, and depression in a healthy way
❖ To impress upon youth that they can help themselves or a friend by taking the simple step of talking to a responsible adult about their concerns
❖ To help students know whom in the school they can turn to for help, if they need it
The goal is to educate your child and to give them guidance on how to get help for themselves or a friend. Several skits that illustrate real life situations that middle or high school students may experience will be discussed. You know your child best and if your child is sensitive to this topic, please contact your child's counselor.
Sincerely,
Deanna Jurkowski, Principal
Concordia JR/ SR High School
If you do NOT wish for your child to participate, please email the school counselor, Brianne Bredehoeft at bbredehoeft@concordia.k12.mo.us by Monday, November 11. If we do not hear from you, we will assume your child has permission to participate in this program.

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian:
Concordia High school is pleased to be able to offer the BackSnack program to our students again this year. The BackSnack program sends food home with students over the weekend. The food is typically enough for one person for about two days. The amount of food could vary depending on our availability. It will come in a plastic bag that will be sent home with the student. Each child in your family who attends school in the Concordia R-2 school district is eligible to receive a BackSnack at the end of the day on Fridays. Please instruct your child to only open the food package at home, never at school, on the bus or walking home.
If you feel this program can benefit your family in any way, please participate. Registration will be confidential and we will fill the backpacks as discreetly as possible. If you would like to participate in the “BackSnack for Kids” program, please complete the information below (one form per family). If you have any questions, please feel free to call or email Mrs. Bredehoeft at the high school at 463-2246 or bbredeheoft@concordia.k12.mo.us. We are planning to start distribution on Friday, October 11.
Sincerely, Deanna Jurkowski, Principal

CHS beautifully completed the football courtyard in the summer of 2013. As an extra feature, an outlined C is inlaid with red bricks in the cemented courtyard between the concession stand and the football field bleachers.
Specially engraved bricks may be designed and purchased to place in this outlined C. This is a unique way to "leave a lasting impression" or to honor people who have been associated with the Concordia R-2 School District. This is a chance for students, alumni, teachers, and patrons of the district to show their school spirit.
Over 60 bricks have already been ordered and installed in the courtyard. Take time to check out the courtyard!
Some ideas of information to have engraved on the bricks are names of students, names of families, years attended school, year graduated, sports and activities involved in, special memories, etc.
This project is a combination of site beautification, recognition, and community building which has become a main purpose of the Oriole Strong program at Concordia R-2. The attractiveness and permanence of the installed engraved brick courtyard will be enjoyed for years to come.
Please click here for the order form and additional information. You may also pick up order forms from Concordia High School, Concordia Elementary School, Concordia Bank, State Bank, and Concordia City Hall. For additional information, contact Theresa Christian, Superintendent, Concordia R-2 School District, 660-463-7235 or Debra Johnson, Concordia High School Secretary, 660-463-2246.
