Algebra I

This class will be co-taught with Mrs. Droege and Mr. Lovercamp. Co-teaching is an educational approach where general education teachers and specialists work together to deliver instruction to all students in an inclusive classroom. The two teachers form a partnership in which both are responsible for meeting all students’ educational needs by teaching and assisting every student in the classroom.

OUR FOCUS:

Algebra I is organized around families of functions, with special emphasis on linear and quadratic functions. You will learn to represent functions in multiple ways—as verbal descriptions, equations, tables, and graphs. You will also learn to model real-world situations using functions in order to solve problems arising from those situations.

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS:

  • Be in your seat and ready to begin when the bell rings.
  • Come to class prepared.
  • Participate in all class activities.
  • Be courteous, considerate, and respectful to others.
  • Help keep the room in order.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Assignments—10 points each
  • Chapter tests—80 to 100 points each
    • You are allowed to retake any test. You will have one week after you have received your graded test to set up a time with me before or after school to take a similar test. I will record the better grade.
  • Cumulative final and End-of-Course Exam—10% of overall grade

MATERIALS NEEDED DAILY:

  • Notebook paper
  • Pencils
  • Dry erase markers
  • Scientific calculator (optional)

LEAVING THE CLASSROOM:

Please take care of all of your needs before class. Do not interrupt the lesson to ask permission to leave the room unless it is an emergency.

HOMEWORK POLICY:

  • Homework must be done in pencil.
  • You must show all of your work on the problems.
  • Final answers must be circled.
  • You may work together on your assignments, however, be careful that your work is your own. You will be held responsible for your understanding.

TEXTBOOK:

Students will be responsible for a textbook throughout the school year. The book can also be found online at https://my.hrw.com as well as study guides, practice quizzes, and videos for each lesson. Students will be given a username and password to log on.

POLICY FOR ABSENT WORK:

Students are responsible for the material covered in class and all assignments while absent. It is your responsibility to come and get your missed assignments when you return to school.

POLICY FOR LATE WORK:

I accept late work, so turn it in!! There will be a 25% deduction in the grade you earned for responsibility points. I accept all late work up to the day the test over that material is taken. All other late work will not be accepted.

TUTORING:

I will be available for extra help both before school at 7:30 and after school until 4:00 (unless I have a prior engagement). Please let me know ahead of time if you plan on coming to see me.
